The Saturday Comics: Wonder Woman

19 May

May 19, 2012

Wonder Woman is a member of The Trinity, DC’s Big Three. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are the characters most revered by other comics characters, as well as the company and fans. But Wonder Woman has never had a consistent characterization and has had multiple titles cancelled due to low sales. So why? Take a look at these covers and tell me what you see.

So am I wrong about Wonder Woman’s appeal? No I am not.

For the most part, WW let herself get chained up, & / or a lot of these covers show rockets being aimed at her. A little Freudian, if you look at it in a certain fashion.

Freudian imagery ABOUNDS in these covers ! & if I recall correctly, Wonder Woman can only be successfully be chained up by a male. If a female tries to do it, they’re unsuccessful. Or is it the other way around ?

These covers are subtle compared to some of the bondage covers of the Golden Age.

It’s amazing what they actually got away with back in the Golden & Silver Ages of comics & in pulp fiction magazine covers, back when people were ( supposedly ) more ” conservative ” & ” wholesome “, back in the days of ” Father Knows Best ” & ” Leave it to Beaver “, etc., when couples were shown sleeping in separate beds, if at all, & the insides of bathrooms weren’t even shown.
