American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior: Cadillac Build-Off Part 1

30 May

May 30, 2011

From the official description of tonight’s episode: Cadillac enlists both OCC and PJD to build a bike in a father-son build-off. But even as the competition heats up, Senior reaches out to Junior with a second settlement offer- this time, without lawyers.

From this blog two weeks ago:  What these two need to do is get rid of the lawyers, sit down together and hammer out a deal.

I really can’t claim any insight or special knowledge, I’m sure most viewers thought the same thing. I just thought I’d point how predictable this show has become.

This is the beginning of the Cadillac build-off. OCC and PJD will each build a Caddy-themed bike and unveil them head to head. The bikes would then be auctioned off for charity.

American Chopper started this week with a short montage about the history of the bad blood between the Teutuls, beginning with Paulie’s firing. It wasn’t a highlight reel as much as it was a lowlight reel of Paul Senior’s lousiest moments. The montage was very one-sided in that it was a lot of clips of Senior running down his son and none of Paulie insulting his father because there are none.

The tone of the show can best be demonstrated by a short sequence at the very cool-looking Cadillac HQ. Senior and Jim were there doing research and development when Paulie, Vinnie, and Brandon arrived. They were kept separate and toured the plant with different guides but at one point they crossed paths in the hallway. The PJD crew all shook hands with Jim, while Senior looked straight ahead and walked past as if they didn’t exist.

“We kind of said hello to each other,” Senior told the camera. No, he didn’t.

“He’s scared,” he said in reference to Paulie. Why? I have no idea. A lot of stuff just falls out of Senior’s mouth that has no bearing in reality. In fact, here are some more nice things Paul Senior said about his son:

“He can’t punk out now.”

“I’m sure he’s real nervous. He’s paranoid.” Some people have been peeking in the shop windows and Paulie had Cody black them out. As the saying goes, it isn’t paranoia if they really are out to get you.

“I’ve been begging for a competition for a while now and he just doesn’t want to compete.” Paulie has been trying to start and build a business. Why would he even think about a competition? This is all Paul Senior’s ego.

“All Jr. did was tweak Jason’s designs.” What show has Senior been watching?

“Jr. doesn’t know how to do a drawing.” Well yes, Paulie doesn’t do them, but we have seen him draw them on the show. He knows how.

“He’s got to do it out of his head, or out of his ass.”

“Knowing Paulie, I guarantee he hasn’t even started putting the bike together… takes him 2 to 3 times longer than us.” The very next clip was PJD already working on the bike.

However, drawings or no drawings, Paulie had one big edge over his father. He brought in a pair of Cadillac CTS-V coupes to work from and they were using actual Caddy parts straight from the cars and fiber optics on the bike.

Senior had a pretty good but not great Jason Pohl design to work from. And as they went, Senior made a few changes. Jason had been on the floor making changes to the design as they built and Senior wanted to know why the fabricators were listening to him. As was I. It was nice to see Pohl with a chagrined look on his face.

Pohl, who Senior said is “a big distraction” in the shop, chimed in and said “I crave the competition.” Early on in the episode Senior pretended to pummel him and I wish there was a workplace accident.

Obviously, since this is a two-parter, the show ended with the bikes in early stages of construction but I think PJD has the edge so far. He’s using a design where the bike won’t need a kickstand. It will lower and sit flat on the ground. And the technology Senior bragged about and then totally left off the Deadliest Catch bike? So far none of it has been seen on the OCC bike.

In the midst of all the badmouthing Senior thought the time would be right to reconcile with his son and also settle the lawsuit. As usual, he thinks settling the issue of the OCC shares is the same as getting back together with his son. If Paulie is thinking of having a relationship with his father he needs to watch this show first.

Sr & Company at Orange County Choppers are not smart enough to realize that if Jr builds a beautiful bike, I think GM will be so impressed as he doesn’t have the the all of what senior has to offer but his brain and smarts. This is how OCC built bikes in the beginning. Sr thinks thay have such an advantage and I think that he is all wrong. Good luck SR as I think your kid is going to also built a real good bike,

That’s a good point. Even if OCC’s bike is better, the fact that they have a huge edge in their shop matters. And for all of Senior’s bluster, I really don;t see that much difference in OCC and PJD bikes.

Looks like you should see occ electric bike setting the speed record. who thought that one up???? hint Paul Sr. that’s right the brains that taught little Pauline T. to walk talk and chew gum all at the same time give me a break Jr needs to get a life remember his stab at something other than building bikes went up in smoke and he just gave it up not like big daddy he kept building and ran two business sold one made one better and the kidys think he owes them ?
What a couple of douche bag son’s un-great-full never had it bad spoiled rotten brats. sissy boys that couldn’t hold there own against any number of real bikers even one bad ass should kick some butt on them . if you let your kids run how your going to treat them then its time to get new kids cuz the old ones are in the pooper.

“All Jr. did was tweak Jason’s drawings.” Its funny, but I don’t recall Jason even being around when Jr. designed the Jet Bike, the Fire Bike, or the infamous Black-Widow Bike.
In all reality, it was the dynamic between Sr. and Jr. that made the show a hit, but it was Jr.’s designs and creativity that put them on the map and gave them credibility as bike builders. Jason is a talented kid, and I hope he lands somewhere good when Sr.’s house of cards come crashing down around him, but he honestly can’t compete with the creativity that pours out of Jr.’s head. I said it at the beginning of the build-off, if Sr. wants to even come close to competing with his son on this, he is going to have to turn Jason loose and let him go. However, he showed us last night that his ego will not allow that. I think Jr. will win this thing, and it will be the crew at OCC who will suffer form Sr.’s loss.

Really good comment. I agree with pretty much all of it. Despite how annoying a person Jason is he is a good designer. Not a great one, but a good one. I’ve said in earlier posts that the OCC bikes are starting to look more and more generic. Last week’s crab bike was an exception but a lot of the credit goes to the paint, not the design. I wasn’t too crazy about the Caddy bike when Jason made the design, but it is hard to compare it to the PJD bike without any idea of what Paulie is doing.

The arguments between Jr & Sr are possibly the only reason this series is still on the air. Over the years, I have become burned out on the disfunctional family factor.

I agree that Jr will win the build-off.

Sr acts like a pendejo most of the time.

I think Jr will deserve to win it but they will wimp out and say it is a tie. PJD will have a better bike and Sr will say it is nioce but not as good as OCC.
People stopped watching for the bikes years ago. They spend very little time on the builds and a lot on the Teutul nonsense.

I love the show! i don’t have a bike of my own and one day i hoped to have one.

I feel sad for Paul Sr. He can’t look at his son in the eye and say, i am proud of you. I believe Paul Jr. is finishing well and strives to keep finishing well at what he knows best. i am sorry for Paul Sr.s loss for his dog. i my self had to go through that. I hope he understands that family is much tighter then eny pet or busness can ever bring.

Forget the details and tell each other how much you love each other. My son ever tryied to go off on his own i would do what ever it took to help him finish well.

When i am gone and i will be one day and to know my children are finishing well. i will know that i finished well.

I agree so many of the bikes that senior has done since late 06 have looked identical except for maybe paint a tank or adding a scoop or a diff. Headlight and/or exhaust…well I think the occ Cadillac bike looks horrid. And the pjd one is sweet,… I still can’t get over the fact that senior has to talk ish about Jr. Every episode it’s like ” hey guys look at how worthless my son is, and how much better the bikes that I claim I design even though mediocre pohl really designed them.” its just sad
With all the technology in the shop they don’t seem to do much with it, paulie is a true craftsman/fabricator and he is a chopper genius, long live PJD

Paulie also has a big ace in the hole- Vinnie, who I think is a much better builder than Paulie, though Paulie can design rings around him. And on the OCC side, Rick Petko is fantastic at what he does, though I think OCC underuses him.

All just opinions yet, we really like them all and are sad Sr. evidently carries a lot of baggage from his early years. He seems to feel non important and begrudges Paulie while any loving father would be happy to have a seat in the rear. As for Jr. I think he could give his dad more due if he wasn’t such a nag. I agree with other comments concerning Sr. tearing down his own son, disapointing. Rhetorically, could his actions as I stated be linked to his early years and how ‘uch the pair are similar? Vinnie, and now Brandon excellent as is Rick for OCC. The others tag alongs blowing whatever direction Sr. is. give us more of the building and fabrication and of course paint. Nubs outstanding and did he also (like Vinnie) get the brush by Sr? Evidently while one senses he is a good man he truly believes he can do it all by himself. A little humbel pie would solve much from both sides. Good luck to them. As i said we all enjoy the show and people.

I think Paul Sr. is jealous of Paul Jr’s talent because he can’t do what Jr. can do , one minute your writing a e-mail about how you want to work things out and the next minute your talking about how JR.can’t present a design drawing to Cadillac and how he has to pull it out of his ass , Sr. is a hypocrite and he is false , how can you treat those kiss ass employees like royalty and talk to and about your own son like dirt , if Jr. ever gets his own show Sr. is done with those old school designs , all he wants to do is rush bikes out the door as quick as possible while Jr. takes his time to be creative and give the customer the absolute best for their money. Just from watching episode 1 of the caddy build I know that Jr.has won whether they give it to him or not. Jr. can and is doing more with less and when his father gives him his 20% and he is able to buy more equipment he is going to destroy OCC PERIOD.

I had to make another comment. How can you stand with your size 12’s crying like a *itch over a dog while your youngest son looks like he wants to commit suicide because he can’t have a relationship with his father or sperm donor and is in limbo and doesn’t know whether to go left or right. We all have pets and we all love our pets but I don’t and never will love my pet more than my children. Sr. you are a sick puppy! If it weren’t for Jr. Mikey might not even be alive right now sad to say , thank god for family that truly cares. Jr. YOU ARE THE MAN , KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK take care of your mother and your brother because your father is sure not going to , all he cares about is his goats and his pretty little miss thing who tells him what he wants to hear instead of what he needs to hear. I guess she’s afraid he’ll give her the size 12’s and get another pretty little miss thing to tell him what he wants to hear and she won’t be in the lap of luxury anymore. I remember one episode with Jr’s mother and she looked like she was struggling to make ends meet , you mean to tell me that with all that money Sr. has he can’t help the kids mother? I hope i’m wrong. And to miss thing I hope that you realize that the lap that your sitting in was created in part by Paul Jr. , now you and Sr. toss that around while you play with your ponies.

He never says anything good about anyone period, he doesnt give credit when it’s due, he can never appreciate Jr. in any way, he has to put him down any chance he gets, and always wonders why he can’t patch things up, well start appreciating him and stop talking mess and that’ll help a bit. Jr. Is the opposite. I don’t understand how Senior thinks that Paulie’s bikes aren’t good, the anti-venom is sweet, he said it’s ok for old technology, new technology on occ bikes is best. Paulie does not have access to billion dollars of equipment like what occ has acquired over the years. He doesn’t need it either, he builds with imagination, creativity, heart soul and dedication to the craft. Senior does none of that, and if at some point he did he never had even 10% of the skill for it that Paulie does, all his bikes are down first buy Jason P. and little mods by sr. and company, and the rest is computer generated and or designed by someone else and or Sr. spends like 2 minutes on it, so I say no bikes that are pure technology aren’t better and the occ cadilac bike is ugly as hell, watch the previews in slow mo you’ll see, new bikes with hand made fab work and/or “old school” tactics are flipping sweet and Senior needs to recognize that Jr helped the brand slot like 75% and that’s all they have now is the brand and what bloomed from the seeds Jr. planted first, and the machines they have access to, without those machines ane especially without the brand occ would never sell those half assed theme bikes, let alone be able to compete with Paul Jr. and Senior realizes it he’s scared and that’s why he talks Jr. down at any moment to anyone within earshot of him, and he has to pass the torch down to Paulie the same torch paulie lit for senior in the first place.

    PJD’s Cadillac bike looks sweet

When Senior talked about technology I thought he was talking about stuff he added to the bikes, like the tachometer a few weeks ago. If he’s talking about how he builds the bikes then I still disagree with him. Using the technology is less impressive to me than Pauluie building things more hands-on. And while Senior, back in the day, did a lot to make OCC, I don’t think he adds a single thing to any of the bikes now.

whether or not the network or caddy gives Jr. the win the fans know who won. There is a site that I voted on and Sr. had 503 votes to Jr’s. 12,000 + votes so it really doesn’t make a difference what caddy and the network does Jr. is the future and after this episode he’s gonna get alot more builds.

I was not impressed with the deadliest catch bike it looked just like the bike that Sr. built with cody but just a different paint job. By the way how did cody end up at PJD? Smart man , now if rick would make the change you would really see some serious bikes being built by PJD. If Sr. does lose I wonder if he is gonna be anxious (“for competition”) another build-off any time soon and I wonder if he is going to man-up and give Jr. some credit. I also want to see if any of the OCC crew gives Jr. any credit , if not i’m going to lose respect for every last one of them.

I’d like to see Rick at PJD but I’m sure they can’t afford him. Rick and Vinnie could do some great work together. Cody has been working with Vinnie at V-Force and when things got busy he brought in Cody for extra help. The Deadliest Catch bike was made by the paint job. The sissy bar looked like crap and the crabs were predictable and didn’t look that good.

I wish Jr all the best although he doesn’t need it. I remember an episode where Rick wanted to check out Jr’s anti-venom bike and Sr told him no! Also Rick wanted to go see Jr and his new shop…on camera Sr said yes but off air he said no effin way. I think we will see Rick heading over to PJD sooner than we think. Guys have you seen the auction bids for both bikes it’s crazy , last checked it was $52,000 for Sr’s bike and $508,000 for Jr’s bike. As far as Rick is concerned Jr. might be able to pay him very soon , i would definitely keep Brendan and I would take Rick with the extra builds that Jr is gonna get he’ll probably need the extra help. I bet Ody feels like a ass now along with everyone else that jumped on the OCC band wagon. From the first episode I knew Sr’s bike wasn’t as good as Jr’s but when you put them side by side Sr’s bike really looks like a piece of junk compared to Jr’s , Rick should be embarrassed to have participated in that build. THE ONLY THING NICE ABOUT SR’S BIKE IS WHERE THE PIPES COME OUT THAT’S IT the rest looks just like everything else that Sr. puts his stamp on , it looks just like it was rushed out the door , look at the front of the bike it looks empty with nothing going on , and then look at Jr’s bike and visually break it down into sections and see the difference front ,middle and rear. I am very disappointed with Cadillac for not having a real build-off like the other bike shows have with voting fans included , Sr. talks the talk so let him take him medicine like a man on national T.V..
