Late Night Movie House: Monster Movie Ads and Trailers

Local TV used to be so cool. Now there is barely any local TV. I’m talking about the independent stations that had no network affiliation. The last one in NY was bought last year by CBS, so instead of cool classic TV reruns and old movies, we get CBS news anchors hosting cooking shows.

Progress. PFFFFFT!

Used to be channel 5 would show Kung-Fu movie double features on Sunday afternoons. Channel 11 used to do Abbott and Costello double features on Saturdays. Every Thanksgiving would bring 3 King Kong movies on Thursday and 3 Godzilla movies on Friday. On weekday afternoons you could find a week of Planet of the Apes films and anytime was a likely time to find a Dracula or Frankenstein film.

Almost as good were the TV Guide ads for those movies. TV Guide is now a slick magazine but it used to be a black and white digest full of ads like these:

The Saturday Afternoon Movie: Chinese Popeye

Saturday is usually the province of Saturday Comics or its occasional step-brother, The Treasure Chest of Terrible Toys. But this is Popeye Week! And Mr. Blog, like Popeye, will not be bound any mere arbitrary rules, even if they are his own arbitrary rules. Especially if they are his own arbitrary rules.

This has popped (Popeyed?) up all around the internet lately but I can only find this short clip. No one seems to have any more. So what is Chinese Popeye about? It is a chinese film about Popeye (duh) and in this clip, he fights mummies.

Yes, I said mummies. So sit back, relax, and prepare yourself for Chinese Popeye. (I’m sure there is a real name for this but everyone just seems to call it Chinese Popeye, and frankly no matter what it is really called, I’m sticking with chinese Popeye.)

If this was out on DVD I would buy it. Probably for no more than $5 from the bootleg peddler on the street, but I’d still buy it.
