“Santa Claus Has Got the AIDS This Year” by Tiny Tim. (Don’t blame me.)

Don’t hate me. This was suggested by oft-time commenter, the full-time Alan Keyes.

Don’t know who Tiny Tim was? This isn’t the “God bless us, everyone” kid. This is the banjo-playing freak show who was popular in the 1960’s and 70’s. Popular for what you ask? I don’t know. He was one of those people whom someone one day called a celebrity and no one argued. I’d compare him to Paris Hilton but I don’t like to speak ill of the dead.

So, with apologies, here is “Santa Claus Has Got the AIDS This Year.”

Tiny Tim was not only a talented performer (he played the ukulele), but a highly respected musical archivist. In the late 1960s he became something of a cultural icon: he had his own television special, was a regular featured guest on television and radio shows, performed at international concert venues, and was featured on an album put out by the Beatles among other things. A lot of people might think he was just a “freak show” novelty act, but to say the guy did nothing to earn his fame is wrong. It is easy too pick on someone as eccentric as Tiny Tim and this song is a pretty outrageous product of his later years. It is very out there and I understand people thinking he was strange because he was. However, he was not a vapid shell like Paris Hilton and died with a lot of people holding nothing but tremendous respect and love for him in their hearts.

I have to agree that he at least earned his fame and unlike Paris Hilton, he actually performed and entertained.
