Funny ads, sure. But replace the Indian men with black men, and do you think those ads get on the air? Native Americans wouldn’t let anyone get away with “me smokum peace pipe.” I guess it is OK to stereotype people from India. They don’t have as big a lobby as other ethnic groups do.

Yeah, “foreign people be funny” ads are rough. TV is running out of acceptable ethnicities to do it to though, I figure if we can survive the annoying Maori bashing of 2013 and the inevitable mockery of the Tofalars in 2015, we’ll be done.

The time has passed, but I could write a blog on how insulting (and simply wrong) the media’s coverage of the vuvuzela was during the world cup. I was waiting to see the history of the horn, beautiful hand-carved wooden examples from back in history, but instead dopey reporters held up 99 cent party favors, little better than a happy meal toy, and talked about what a “tradition” they were.

Interesting point. The first ad is funny and stupid, the second is just scary.

I pointedly did not use the word “racism” because I don’t think any exists here. I just find it interesting that you can get away with some things with one group but not another.
For the record, I laugh at all those ads, especially the SNY ad I didn’t link too, with Keith Hernandez moustache day at NY NY Sports Sports. Find it on YouTube, it’s a good one.
