Imponderable #18: Bogotá

What, you don’t read Hispanically Speaking News?

I am sure many of you are expecting me to go off about art, and what does and does not constitute art, but while you’ve got history on your side that isn’t where I am heading.

I am zeroing in on this line. “The family of the deceased has denounced neglect from the part of the incident of the university, as they allege they failed to contact emergencies in a timely manner, and for allowing ‘irresponsible activities’ on campus.”

I am sure many of you are now expecting me to go off about grammar but while you’ve still got history on your side that isn’t where I am heading. I give this one a pass.

Here’s where I am going. The family of the deceased is upset with the school for allowing “irresponsible activities.” I have to believe that by that they mean the performance.

In other words, it is the school’s fault.
Not the fault of the man who tied a garbage bag tight over his head, the school’s.
And certainly not the fault of his mother, who encouraged changes to “make it more impacting.”

It was certainly impacting.

Why would a grieving family blame anyone but their dead son for his own death?

The question is understandable.

Why wasn’t a grown man able to rip a hole in an ordinary garbage bag so he could breath?

THAT question is Imponderable.

Am I a bad person because I’m laughing?

What makes it so funny is that is all makes perfect sense. The university wouldn’t have dared to suggest that there might be better ways to make your point than putting a plastic bag over your head because then it would be accused of censorship. The audience wouldn’t have dared to come to his aid because they would have been accused of not “getting it.” And of course the guy couldn’t pull the bag off his head because then he would have been giving up his artistic integrity. Watch for a plaque or statue to be erected on campus at the insistence of the mother.

So he died in the name of art? Well that will certainly help the perception of Bogota. But the question is, will the statue include the bag?

This is why those idiotic warning labels have to be put on everything. Why not sue the garbage bag manufacturer while they’re at it?

I also wonder why Hispanically Speaking News is printed in English?

I am not a fan of California Governor Brown but this letter he recently wrote in response ot a proposed legislation sums up my feelings on warning labels.

To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am returning Senate Bill 105 without my signature.
This measure would impose criminal penalites on a child under the age of 18 and his or her parents if the child skis or snowboards without a helmet.
While I appreciate the value of wearing a ski helmet, I am concerned about the continuing and seemingly inexorable transfer of authority from parents to the state.

Not every human problem deserves a law.

I believe parents have the ability and the responsibility to make good choices for their children.
      Sincerely,
      Edmund G. Brown

I didn’t think it a fight worth bothering with, but my God, if you are going to print it in English, get someone who is fluent in the language to edit it.
