Picture Postcard: Lonely Soldier

I took this picture some months ago. This is a breakwater in Lower Gravesend Bay here in Brooklyn.

I’ll admit it isn’t the greatest picture I ever took. I was standing on the seawall and looking down from about ten feet up. Notice anything unusual? You might not notice anything at first, but take a look at the thing sitting on the rock in the center of the shot.

It is some sort of small figurine. You can clearly see the base. I snapped this with my cell phone so the resolution isn’t the best but it is not a rock. It is a small figure that someone deliberately placed there. I don’t know how long it has been there, but it is so small that the tide will surely wash it away. I was just standing by the water, looked down, and there it was. Keep in mind that this is not a beach. This is a seawall the end of a street behind a shopping center. There is no access unless you hop a fence and climb down and over those large rocks.

I wish I could tell what it was. I took it with my cell phone. If I had the camera we could tell pretty easily.

Thanks. It was just a right place/right time thing. It would have been a real chore to place it there, and it could not have been there very long.

I was wondering– a few years ago I had to take a bus from JFK to Newark airport. I’ve never been able to figure out the exact route we took but I think we sort of went along the shore in Brooklyn. Do you know if we would have been anywhere near Gravesend Bay?

You most likely would have taken the Belt Parkway to the Verrazano Bridge, which would have taken you into to Staten Island and to the Goethels Bridge into New Jersey. The Belt Parkway, after passing Sheepshead Bay, would have passed near Coney Island and then right along the water. That was Lower Gravesend Bay and the Verrazano Bridge crossed The Narrows which divides Upper and Lower Gravesend Bay.
