Secret Origin Of A Super-Villain

Think over the top bad guys and evil geniuses exist only in comic books? Think again.

Johnathan T. Pinney first came to the public’s attention in 2008. He had been arrested for biting a police officer. Ordinarily, that wouldn’t be enough to get noticed by the nationwide press, but at his trial he had a few demands.

There was more but that gives you the idea. I direct your attention to the third paragraph. This man has been found fit to stand trial.

He claimed he “embraces evil” and wanted to wear a cape for his trial. At the hearing, he “fingered his beard while sitting at the defense table.” Personally, I would have said he fingered his beard diabolically while sitting at the table. That’s the way to write an article.

As you might expect, things didn’t go so well for him. That was the last we heard from Mr. Pinney until this article from this past July:

This guy needs a comic book name. Too bad Doctor Doom is already taken. (BTW- Dr. Doom isn’t a doctor. He never finished his degree. Victor von Doom dropped out of college and it was all the accursed Reed Richard’s fault.)

He wants his own nation. Can this get any better?

Yes it can.

Doctor Mayhem has thought this one through. He wants his own country. Not just any country, but one with an adequate water supply, and he has given thought to the issue of “native pest control,” by which I assume he means any native population. He is clearly an evil scientist since he refers to the “stimulation of volcanic activity” which I take to mean that he will soon develop a secret lair inside an active volcano. And he seems to know many hidden secrets since he demands access to Area 51. Can he be forging an alliance with hostile aliens, like the Skrulls? The diplomatic immunity and fifty billion dollars are just icing on the cake. And the money, I’m sure, will go a long way in financing the creation of a race of Atomic Supermen with which to rule the world.

This man is too dangerous to go free. Surely he is also too dangerous to remain in the general prison population. If he has gone public with his demands, I can only assume that he has already amassed his henchmen and goons and will soon escape the prison via an inter-dimensional tunnel, or at the very least a hot air balloon like Gene Hackman in Superman II.

I urge the authorities to take this man seriously. He needs to be imprisoned in The Phantom Zone, ASAP.

He might have had a shot at getting his demands met but I think access to Area 51 is going to be a deal breaker 🙂

Hate to say it but I’m rooting for the guy. What the world needs is less terrorism and more comic book villany.

Dr. Mayhem. Bites a policeman. He could have a career as heavy metal artist or perhaps a WWE pro – wrestler if the ” ruling his own nation ” thing doesn’t pan out.

He can haz Libya, plz ? 😉 or maybe start smaller ( like the Pacific island of Nauru ) & work up.

My ambitions are more modest – I just want 1 of the Near – Earth asteroids…..

Give him Nauru, like I said, even though it DOESN’T fulfill his requirements. No fresh water, tepid 5 – minute supplies of running water, sporadic electricity, & the island sat atop a giant supply of phosphate – fossilized bird guano, & was once the Micronesian equivalent of Dubai or Quatar.

It could be home to his ” Hall of Doom “….. 😉

                ” You mean you never told your….. Admiral the tale ? “. ” PINNNNNEEEYYYYYY !!! ” Doesn’t sound the same as ” KHAAANNNN !!!! ”

” You will bow down before me, no matter that it takes an eternity. Both you, & one day, your heirs ! ”

” KNEEL BEFORE PINNEY ! “….. Nope, just doesn’t sound quite right.

When I refer to him, I always use the entire name, Johnathan T. Pinney. “KNEEL BEFORE JOHNATHAN T. PINNEY!”

And I imagine the T stands for Terrible or Tyrant.

Pinney….. The last name doesn’t exactly inspire feelings of shock, awe & fear. He looks like a Tommy Chong wannabe, or a sleazy male Ron Jeremy – type porn star ( Not that I’d know about stuff like that, y’all understand. 😉 ).

I have never seen him in action, and looking at him I REALLY don’t want to. He pops up on shows every once in a while and he always looks to me like he needs a good shower.

They could give him Kiribati, an atoll country out this way. For some reason it’s pronounced Kiribas and they are already making plans to evacuate the population because if the polar ice caps melt the islands will be under water in a few years. So solving that problem can keep him busy. There may also be some interesting creatures for him to fight because the US did some nuclear tests on some of the islands during the 50s.

He’d have that island airborne in no time. But I want to see him versus the giant irradiated ants. That would be epic.

I’ve heard about Kiribati / Kiribas. It’s kind of like Venice. Not EXACTLY a tropical paradise.
There’s always Easter Island, with all those mysterious statues. It was a ” paradise “, & scientists believe that the natives deforested it to use the tree trunks as rollers for their giant statues / ” Moai “. The Chilean gov’t. MIGHT be persuaded to part with it cheaply. Not sure that Isla de Pascua is bringing in much tourism anymore, except for eco – tourists & archeologists.

Which was that other island in the Jurassic Park sequel? The one where they did all the experimenting. He needs a monster island sort of place.

That reminds me of Dr. Demonicus, the evil owner of Monster Island in the Godzilla comics from the70’s.

Not sure – What about ” The Island Of Dr. Moreau ” ?

I think I remember a movie w / Val Kilmer based on the novel. I think the paperback version is still in my stuff – that – needs – to be – unpacked still in my cousin’s garage. 😉

Gold Key ( Remember them ? ) may have even made a comic book version of it.

The novel is awesome but I was unimpressed with the Kilmer movie. Unpack it!
Of course I remember Gold Key. Their comics are still a fun read, and the covers rocked. They did Star Trek, Boris Karloff, Twilight Zone, Dark Shadows, and more back in the day.

I think his brain already is in the phantom zone… >_>’

But wait: he got four years for biting a man? Really? I’m not saying he should be allowed to do that, but isn’t that a bit harsh?

I think it was because of the circumstances of the assault and the judge decided to go harsh due to his lack of remorse and courtroom behavior.

” The Island of Dr. Moreau ” Not one of Val’s best roles.

I remember Twilight Zone in Comic book form & Star Trek, but not Dark Shadows, nor Boris Karloff. Pop – Cultural trivia occupies 45 – 65 % of my cranial storage space. 😉 🙂

They aren’t all that valuble in terms of money, but in terms of the cool factor and what they mean to me? Prcieless. I have 4 Star Treks from Gold Key but 5 volumes of the reprint collections. I have about 5 Dark Shadows issues and 3 or 4 each of Twilight Zone and Karloff, plus some of the new collections. The stories are not the best, but I love those series.

Only a handful of my comics ever got trashed, but over the last few years I went from about 32 short boxes to less than 8. I sold some. I gave away a lot, and I figured that sheer volume was a silly measure of a collection and I pared it down to the ones that I liked or meant something to me. That means that I have a ton of valueless comics with no covers but those mean more to me than most of the mint condition ones I don’t miss. But I did keep some of the valuable issues and runs. The issues of MAD I don’t miss either because all the good stuff is reprinted in the Decades volumes.
