I went to something called Rise of the Jack-o-Lanterns in Old Westbury Gardens. This is an event in a pitch-black, lonely rural patch of woods where they play spooky music and sound effects and the path is lit only by the most amazing jack-o-lanterns. In particular, I wanted to share five amazing lanterns, carved in the images of The Avengers.
And now I’ll present a few more photos just to give you a taste of what it was like there. It was a half-mile of about 5,000 pumpkins, some in a large open area, many in a dark, tree-shrouded path.

Interesting & nice – looking ! I’ve never been able to carve a pumpkin for the life of me.
I was looking up some jack o’lantern pictures ( & taking some cell camera phone pics whenever I could ) for my cousin, who is writing a story about jack o’lanterns, looking for their history & everything, & I chanced across some ” Dalek o’lanterns ” & ” TARDIS o’lanterns ” during an internet search. It was kinda fun. 😉 I even found some carvings of the Pandorica on – line !!

I’ve seen a few photos of those. & even Cylon jack o’lanterns, but Dalek Pumpkins / lanterns were interesting. Good luck at trying to find those in the mid – South / Bible – belt America ! 😀

I saw so many tv and cartoon inspired pumpkins there, even athletes and astronauts, but what disappointed me was the lack of scary pumpkins- no Dracula, for example (though there was Count Chokula!) The other thing that disappointed me was that my photos didn’t come out nearly as well as they should have.

Around here ( Mid TN area ) they appear to have standard – issue jack o’lanterns, mostly uninspired. Not much uniqueness.

I know what you man about photography – I got a video / still camera 2 Christmases ago that you could store video & images on with a mini – DVD, then a CHEAP ( We’re talking $ 8.00 ) digital camera….. meh 😦 Then I discovered that my cell camera did just as good a job as a more expensive one.

Great. I did see 1 jack o’lantern here where a witch apparently flew through a pumpkin, just living an outline of herself & a broom, that’s as creative as they get.

Great pics–looks like a fun place. I saw some blue jack-o-lanterns when I was in the US but didn’t know if there was any significance to them. Is there?

I doubt it. I haven’t seen any real ones but I’ve seen plenty of plastic jack-o-lanterns painted all different colors. If there is a meaning to blue jack-o-lanterns it is unknown to me.
It was a lot of fun, one of the only real Halloween-y things I’ve done in the past few years.

Plastic lack o’lanterns are a cop – out ( although the ones that light up change color are pretty interesting ), just like fake Christmas trees – says the man who has both faux jack o’lanterns & faux trees. 😉

I get a fake christmas tree because it’s a hassle to get a new one. I have a real pumpkin this year, but I’m going to tattoo it with a Sharpie marker ( Cause I can’t carve for beans ). As to haunted houses,like Thomas Stazyk mentioned, the town I moved to has a ” Ghost Walk ” from 30th October – 1st November. A lot of wanna – be ghost hunters go on this nocturnal outing. At $40 a pop, I’d better see a bona fide shade, revenant, phantom, spectere, or maybe experience some poltergeist activity.

I went on a tour with a so-called “ghost hunter” in San Diego. What a joke the guy was. It was a nice walk in a historic part of the city but hardly a ghost hunt.

We had a lot of spots where people – soldiers & civilians both – died during the Civil War & there are people around here who practically SWEAR that there are ” haunted ” areas. 1 woman moved into a rental house, & she was ** sure ** that the place was haunted. I reserve judgement, having not been in her house.

It is hard to find a place in the South that people don’t claim is haunted, I’ve heard. Not that I am any kind of authority but I’ve been in a few “haunted” places and not seen or felt a thing.

From what I could tell, Haunted Houses have become a big business. I remember when the Jaycees would have some lame thing in an old house but now they look like they are themed (e.g., zombies, aliens) and everything.

I looked into some of those in the NYC area and wow, not only pricey, but scary as yuo can imagine. too much for me!
