Isn’t that a great film? I love old movies. And I am sure that Hollywood will remake it any day now, because everything old is new again some time. And that’s true at Mr. BTR as well.
We have a lot of callbacks and returns this week. The Late Night Movie House of Crap returns on Monday, and the American Chopper Weekly Rundown continues its long-running engagement right after the show airs. Wednesday will be another installment of The Blog That Was a Decade in the Making, Thursday will be a Classic Repost from 2009, and Friday will feature an all-new Imponderable. All this, Saturday Comics continues with the least likely comic book star ever, and more, this week on Mr. Blog’s Tepid Ride.

Remakes – Hmmmm….. I think that there are some movies that shouldn’t be re – made because they’re so ” iconic “, Like ” Planet of the Apes “. & I hear that the people who filmed ” TRON Legacy ” are going to do a new version of ” Logan’s Run “, even though the re – make would be much truer to the original novel. in which the age that one lived to before ” Last Day ” was 20, & the ” Sandmen ” used heat – seeking projectiles.
And if anyone ever talks about remaking ” Blade Runner “, I’ll find out their address, & send them a box of scorpions via UPS….. 😉
On the OTHER hand, if done properly, the classic Outer Limits episode by Harlan Ellison, ” Demon With A Glass Hand “, would make a GREAT full – length movie. & ” I Have No Mouth, But I must Scream ” would be great on the big screen, too ( If done well ) & Isaac Asimov’s REAL script for ” I, ROBOT “, done as a collaboration w / Harlan Ellison. That script is sitting on a shelf somewhere at MGM / UA, I think.

The current Rise of the Planet of the Apes isn’t really a remake so I’m OK with it. The Mark Wahlberg version? Blasphemy! Plus it sucked.
And now they are remaking The Thing. I get why Hollywood does remakes, but since there are already two great versions of that film, do we need a third?
Demaon with a Glass Hand. I love that ep but now that you made me think about it, it could really benefit from a big budget.

I absolutely FREAKING WITHOUT A DOUBT loved ” Rise of the Planet of the Apes “. It could be considered a prequel to both the original ” PotA ” & the version with Wahlberg, since it gave a plausible explanation for the apes’ accelerated intelligence. David Hewlett, aka ” Rodney Mckay ” from Stargate SG1 & SG Atlantis really played a complaining twat of a neighbour, but it was interesting to see he’s still getting work.
Just how many remakes of ” The Thing ” does this make, anyhow ? I think it’s 3.
Harlan Ellison was going to put his antagonist Trent from ” Demon with A Glass Hand ” in an episode of Babylon 5, but it never came about. I wonder how he would’ve accomplished this. ” Demon ” w / make a great big – budget movie. DON’T let SyFy try it, for the love of all that’s holy. 😉

There’s the original 1951 Howard Hawks film, and the Kurt Russell remake. Both are great. Why mess with it? And they are also based on the short story “Who Goes There?” which I have never read but I’ve got it in an anthology. Hollywood, stop right there. We have enough.

Hollywood, get SOME NEW IDEAS ! We don’t need another re – envisioning of ” The Green Hornet “, ” Captain America “, ” The Shining ” ( although the Sci – Fi version of it was actually QUITE good, even w / out Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance ), ” War of the Worlds “, etc. Surely Hollywood isn’t THAT creatively destitute tha they have to recycle older ideas. Although a version of ” Logan’s Run ” closer to the original story w / be interesting.

While yes, they are that cretively desperate, they do know two things that are inargueable. One, that remakes make money and two, they are less risky. Why market an original idea when The Thing is a known quantity and already has a built in fan base?

Of course if the public would wise up and stop paying $13 for a film they’ve seen three versions of already then maybe things would change.

Wait for it to come out on Netflix / Quikster ( Whatever they’re calling the non – streaming video part of their svc ) or on Hulu. I caught at least 2 movies on Hulu.

This blogging thing, I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. As the line in Rear WIndow goes:

By the way, I used to work in Brooklyn Heights, at the old St. George Hotel. I’ve been thinking for a long time about writing about that place. Maybe I’ll do it now.
