American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior: A Meeting Is Set

16 Apr

April 16, 2012

For those of you who missed it, Donald Trump fired Paul Senior on last night’s Celebrity Apprentice. His task? Put on a puppet show. He failed. But did he really lose? His teammates loved him, he was (until last night) universally praised by Team Trump, and he never lost his temper. In fact, other than badgering George Takei in week one, he came off as easy-going and affable. Millions of people who never saw him on American Chopper have a very different opinion of him than we do. It was an amazing job of spin control and changing his image.

A MEETING IS SET April 16, 2012
OCC starts a 1970s-themed build for MyPillow, while PJD puts the finishing touches on a bike for Newmont Mining. Then, in a promising move, Senior and Junior agree to meet in person.

A lot of Jason to begin with. Sorry. MyPillow has hired OCC to build a 70’s bike and of course, who do you think of when you think 70’s? Jason Pohl of course. Luckily Senior has some ideas.

PJD is finishing the bike for the mining company and the centerpiece will be a lump of gold straight from the mine.

Vinnie and Rick got together in the usual diner and the topic was the odd text (U lie stay away from me) that Mikey sent to Senior last week. These are the two sanest guys in their shops and they genuinely care but really, they should both butt out. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Rick, surprisingly, reported back to Senior that Vinnie knew nothing about it. Rick, stay out of it! Meanwhile, the man himself, Mikey has not appeared yet this week.

At about 9:30 Paulie called Senior to set up an off-camera meet. I think he’s right. Senior agrees but he also says it is like he is cheating his fans. Why is he worrying about his fans when his son is reaching out him? I think someone is really managing his image behind the scenes.

“The bottom line is that I have to make a phone call and reach back out to him.” Where would this show be without cell phones?

Meanwhile, and forgive me giving them short shrift, the bikes were built and unveiled and the show ended without Mikey but it did have a phone call between father and son to set up the meet.

American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior: Breakthrough

9 Apr

April 9, 2012

Before we get to the show, I hope you saw The Celebrity Apprentice last night. I have been doing a weekly recap of that show for one and only one reason: Paul Senior. And while he was in a feud early on with George Takei, it was last night where he made his greatest contribution. Here he is, acting in a commercial in a dramatic role, really stretching his chops in a role that is very foreign to him, a father.

This is why you must watch that show. Amazing! He looks so normal, so calm, so un -Paul Senior that words fail me. But you guys are never at a loss for words. Leave me your best comments and captions for that picture and I will come up with some sort of prize for the best.

American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior Breakthrough
After receiving a puzzling text from Mikey, Senior calls Junior to make amends. PJD starts a build for Newmont Mining while OCC unveils a bike for CIMA Green. Then, Junior asks Senior for a face-to-face meeting, sans cameras.

A puzzling text from Mikey? I don’t believe it, he is usually so well-thought out.

Anyway, the last time we saw Paul Senior he was not wearing a sweater or reading a book, he was stalking his sons. He went to Mikey’s “art” studio, no Mikey. Went to Paulie’s house, no Paulie. Where in the world will Carmen I mean Paul Senior show up next? Let’s watch.

OCC is still working on the double build for CIMA Green, a pair of street-legal bio-diesel bikes.

Meanwhile, Vinnie and Mikey (yeah, what a representative)  are taking a client meeting in Nevada with Newmont Gold Mining Corp, a gold refinery. They got to see gold poured into bricks, worth thousands of dollars. They were way down underground, in a mine. If your only experience with mines is with trapped miners from south America, this is way more high-tech. Mikey and Vinnie got to set off some explosives, and Mikey and dynamite is a scary combination.

Over at OCC, Senior called Rick in to decipher a text from Mikey: “U lie, stay away  from me please.” Very mature. I feel sorry for Rick getting dragged into the middle of that. Senior manages to come across as sad and sympathetic but then you need to remember this:

PJD’s mining bike is going to incorporate tools and mining equipment. Paulie wants a rugged, tough looking bike.

Meanwhile, if it were not for cell phones where would the Teutuls be? Paul Senior left Paulie a message saying that he had tried to see him and, more importantly, that he loved him. How will Paulie respond? The episode description seems to have given it away: Junior asks Senior for a face-to-face meeting, sans cameras.  No cameras. Smart move.

Meanwhile, a mystery at PJD: who broke the hydraulic press? Vinnie suspects Cody and Petey. Cody denies any knowledge but he implies it is Pete. My own mystery: who is this Petey kid? But who is on the case? Mikey. After all, there is nothing else for him to do.

BTW: It is 9:45 and as usual, the big tease remains just that, a big tease. As usual discovery builds a show around some sort of family tension and then ignores it for most of the show.

Also BTW: You might want to stick around because next is the debut of the new Jesse James program, Outlaw Garage. Seriously, you knew his appearance in the build-off had to lead to that.

9:51. Commercial break. Still have not seen Paulie’s reaction to Senior’s message.

9:54. The bio-diesel bikes get unveiled.

9:57. Paulie finally listens to the message. He decides to see his father in person. About time. anyway, he leaves Senior a message and it just begs the question, do any of them ever answer their phone?

NEXT WEEK:
American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior A Meeting is Set

American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior
Drastic Step
Mikey launches a “Fill the Diaper” fundraising campaign for March of Dimes, OCC starts an eco-friendly build for CIMA Green and PJD unveils the March of Dimes bike. Meanwhile, Senior takes bold steps to reunite with his sons.

The tease this week is that Senior appears, unannounced at Paulie’s house (who appears to not be home) and then he pops up at Mikey’s (snicker) “art” studio. It is the OCC version of Where’s Waldo?

PJD’s purple March of Dimes bike build continues. And I seriously mean purple. So far, it is solid purple. It is a nice purple, but so far, nothing but purple and chrome. As Paulie says, it is all up to Nub and how he designs the tins.

OCC is building a bike for a biofuel company and they take a tour of the factory where soy bean and vegetable oil gets turned into diesel. Bikes running on biodiesel smell like french fries. Literally. The exhaust smells like french fries. I’ve complained in the past that Jason didn’t go on these tours but there he was this week, drinking smelly soy oil.

For The March of Dimes, Mikey has come up with some sort of “fill the diaper” challenge. Mikey’s huge, legally blind personal assistant was there this week, carrying a sign and standing much closer to the edge of the road than a legally blind man should be. So what was the “fill the diaper” challenge? Mikey stood my the side of a road with a diaper in a bucket and screamed at passing cars to toss in some cash. That was it.

“We resonated the echo of what people need to hear down the line.” -Mikey, describing a good days work. Huh?

Why isn’t Mikey auctioning off some of his art for charity? I asked Mr Allen Keyes, watching with me this week, and he replied “because nobody would buy that shit.” Mikey, BTW, with shorter hair and a shorter beard, looked pretty much presentable this week.

Paulie and Mikey are being interviewed by The March of Dimes newsletter for their website, and of course they were asked about Paul Sr. “He’s got a real poison sort of mentality.” -Mikey, talking about his father.

“The problem doesn’t lie within us. We are not the ones perpetuating the hatred.” -Paulie, taking the blame off himself and Mikey. “He’s always the victim. That’s his mentality.”

Over at OCC, Jason has, for some reason, named the twin CIMA bikes. One is Sally, the other is as yet unnamed.  The bikes will be mostly green since the company is CIMA Green. Mike pointed out that the bikes will have turn signals and be street legal and EPA compliant in all fifty states. That is worth noting. When was the last time you saw an OCC bike that had turn signals?

OCC bought a fender this week for $1,000 and it was too small for the wheels. Rick offered to make another fender. Senior explained that OCC was under a time crunch which is why they bought a fender rather than making it. I think OCC buying a fender is a cheat. In the end, they compromised and modified a stock fender. Same with the tank- not an original OCC part.

Nub showed up with Paulie’s March of Dimes tins and Nub knows his stuff. He used various tones of purple and a lot of silver. Nice job. There was some drama with a plug fused into the socket on the bottom of the tank which had to be drilled out but it all turned out well in the end.

Speaking of all turns out well in the end, at 9:39 the show finally got to what it promised, with Senior driving over to Paulie’s house. As noted earlier, Paulie wasn’t home. “BLEEP,” Senior said. “BLEEP.” Where was Paulie? Filming an American Chopper special in Florida, according to the bumper. How edited is this show? How far apart in tine are the March of Dimes build and Paulie visiting his son’s house? The show makes it appear like they are concurrent events but you have to wonder if they are days or even weeks apart. The show is filmed for a certain amount of weeks, then they are edited down into separate episodes. How much mixing and matching across time do they do when creating each “reality” show?

After the break we are back at PJD working on the March of Dimes bike. We have apparently also traveled back in time. either that or he got back from Florida really fast.

Cut to the future, where Senior is telling his wife he just came back from his son’s house. Senior liked Paulie’s dogs.

His next move is to go to Mikey’s studio and donate some money for The March of Dimes. “I’m gonna walk in there, ask him how he’s doing, and give him a bunch of money for the March of Dimes… Here, how are ya, here’s some money for The March of Dimes.” Does he do it? How does it go? I don’t know yet. It is commercial time.

9:52, back from commercial, and Senior drives over to Mikey’s gallery. Guess what? It isn’t open! Mikey isn’t there. “I guess I’m striking out.”

Amazingly anticlimactic.

NEXT WEEK: Muscle Car Special.  Junior builds a muscle car.
